First and most common is the yard sign. You can get a yard sign at any hardware store and at many office supply stores. The sign will cost you about $10-$15 and the stand to hold it should run from $15-$20. While you are there, see if you can find a flier box or tube.

Fliers or brochures are the next most common marketing tool available to home-owners selling their own home. The trick to fliers is to leave the reader hungry and excited to see more. A lot of the fliers I see spell out every detail of a home. Most people stop and grab a flier out of curiosity. Instead of satisfying it, find a way to peak that curiosity. Give only enough information to help buyers be able to remember the home, and bare essentials. If you are asking top dollar for your home consider omitting the price.

Every newspaper that I have ever seen has a real estate classifieds section. Month-long ads along the Wasatch Front cost about $100 give or take. A lot of people start their search for their next home in the classifieds section of the local newspaper. The only downfall to this method of advertisement is that a lot of Realtors search for their next client in the same place. If you run an ad in the paper you will get calls from Realtors wanting to list your home.

The internet is fast becoming the primary way to market real estate, and why not? The internet is always on and it is accessible to most of the public. Even someone overseas can find out what kind of homes are available in this area just by logging-on. As you look for a website to advertise your home keep in mind that there are at least two different kinds.

The first kind of website you will find will want to charge you some very expensive fees (as much as $1000) to advertise your home online. In my opinion if you are going to spend that kind of money you just as well hire a Realtor. At least then you would have someone to help you with the paperwork.

The second type of internet site you will find probably won’t cost you anything. There are a lot of sites out there that will let you advertise your home on their website if you buy their products. Sign companies and flier tube companies are good examples. Many sign and flier tube companies will offer you an internet advertisement if you buy their sign or flier tube. Remember that buyers have to be able to find your home online if the advertisement is to do any good. Sites that are intended to market signs or something else don’t do a very good job of marketing homes.
